Product Information / Press Release Terbutaline widens constricted airways in the lungs by relaxing the smooth muscles that surround bronchial passages.
Use when needed to relieve breathing difficulty. Inhalation aerosol-- Adults and children age 12 and older: 1 to 2 inhalations every four to six hours. Wait one minute between first and second inhalations. Infants and children under 12 years of age: Not recommended. Tablets-- Adults and children age 12 and older: 2.5 to 5 mg taken three times a day, ideally at six-hour intervals. Children under 12 years of age: Consult a pediatrician.
Onset of Effect Inhalation: Within five minutes. Oral: one to two hours.
Duration of Action Three to six hours for the inhalation; up to eight hours for tablets.
Dietary Advice Maintain your usual food and fluid intake.
Storage Store in a tightly sealed container away from heat and direct light. Do not refrigerate inhalation solutions.
Prolonged Use Therapy with this medication may require months or years. Excessive use may result in temporary loss of the drug's effectiveness.
Special Concerns Pay heed to any asthma attack or other breathing problem that does not improve after your usual nebulizer treatment or usual number of puffs. Seek help immediately if you feel your lungs are persistently constricted, if you are using more than the recommended number of treatments or puffs per day, or if you feel a recent attack is somehow different from others.
Overdose Symptoms Chest pain or heaviness; irregular, racing, fluttering, or pounding heartbeat; dizziness or lightheadedness; fainting; severe weakness; severe headache.
Disease Interactions Consult your doctor if you have a history of substance abuse (especially cocaine), seizures, brain damage, heart disease, heartbeat irregularities, high blood pressure, anxiety disorders, or a thyroid condition
