| News:The J.R. Simplot Company Launches the First Zero-Grams Trans Fat French Fry for Foodservice
BOISE, Idaho--(BUSINESS WIRE)--May 17, 2004--The J.R. Simplot Company, one of the largest global suppliers of frozen french fries, today announced the launch of a foodservice breakthrough -- the industry's first zero-grams trans fat french fry: the Infinity(TM) Fry. Simplot has developed Infinity Fries specifically to address health concerns associated with trans fat, also known as hydrogenated fat.
Taste still rules, in fact, consumer testing proves that Infinity Fries both baked and fried have the same taste, aroma and crispiness of traditional french fries. Yet, Infinity Fries are made with 100% non-hydrogenated vegetable oil offering restaurateurs a zero-grams trans fat french fry option. They also have lower saturated fat than traditional fries.
"With heightened consumer interest in health, we found it imperative to provide a fry that consumers can enjoy and feel good about eating. After all, french fries still rank as America's favorite vegetable," states James Munyon, Simplot Food Group President.
Over the past year, the backlash against trans fat has been significant. Several major packaged foods companies are working to remove trans fat from products including cookies, cakes, crackers and chips. Furthermore, under the new FDA regulations, by January 1, 2006, nutrition labels will list the trans fat in foods directly under the line for saturated fat. The new information is the first significant change on the Nutrition Facts panel since it was established in 1993.
The Simplot Food Group is a foodservice pioneer and leading innovator in the potato business with 20 direct and affiliated processing plants in the U.S., Mexico, Canada, Australia and China. Simplot supplies more than 1,000 potato, vegetable, fruit and avocado products to the foodservice industry under such brands as Simplot Classic(R), Blue Ribbon(R), Ultra Clear(TM), RoastWorks(TM), and Culinary Select(TM). Simplot is a privately held global agribusiness corporation based in Boise, Idaho, with more than 12,000 employees and annual revenues exceeding $3 billion. In addition to food processing, the firm is principally engaged in fertilizer manufacturing, cattle feeding, farming and turf products.
