Multi-Media Sensation Raven-Symone Readies Hollywood Solo Debut; Fans Anticipate the Recording Artist and TV Star's New Release ``This Is My Time'' on Sept. 21
BURBANK, Calif.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Aug. 17, 2004--This is the time for Raven-Symone to take flight as a musical superstar.
The star of Disney Channel's "That's So Raven" series and a contributor to several platinum soundtracks adds to her busy schedule with the release of her Hollywood Records solo debut, "This is My Time," on Sept. 21.
"It's a whole new sound for me," says the young veteran of her new disc. "I wanted to make an album that mixes new soul with alternative with hip-hop. I enjoy all different types of music, from Alanis Morissette to Janet and Jay-Z. I love the freedom to mix it all up, to create my own sound."
Bob Cavallo, chairman of the Buena Vista Music Group, said, "Raven-Symone is a triple threat performer -- TV, film and music. We are excited to have this talented young artist on our label and look forward to helping her build a successful music career."
That eclectic approach led Raven-Symone to a variety of different collaborators. The album's first single, "Backflip," was written and produced by both Scott Storch (who has worked on hits for Beyonce, Ja Rule and Jadakiss, among others) and Kara DioGuardi (who penned Hilary Duff's hit "Come Clean"). Other contributors to the album include Diane Warren, Walter Afansieff (Gloria Estefan), Matthew Gerrard (Hilary Duff) and even electronic trip-hop artist/producer Tricky. Raven co-wrote four songs on the album, including the title track.
Raven-Symone's music career began in 1989, at the age of five, when she was the youngest artist ever to sign with MCA Records. Her debut, "Here's to New Dreams," was released in 1993. The album included the hit single, "That's What Little Girls Are Made Of," which marked the first of what would become many smash hits for a young songwriter named Missy Elliott. Her second album, 1999's "Undeniable," featured a track written for her by Stevie Wonder, who also appeared on the record. To promote the album, Raven opened for NSYNC on tour and then embarked on her own solo tour.
While "This is My Time" represents her first solo effort for Hollywood Records, Raven-Symone has appeared on several recent hit soundtracks, most recently "Princess Diaries 2." She earned her first platinum album with the soundtrack CD for "The Cheetah Girls," the Disney Channel's first musical movie, produced by Whitney Houston. The singer also starred as diva Galleria Garibaldi in the feature, which has spawned its own TV series. Raven played Olivia on the hit TV series "The Cosby Show" and Nicole in "Hangin' with Mr. Cooper."
"I've always felt that singing has half my heart and acting the other," says Raven-Symone. "There's a lot of stuff going on right now -- but this is my time to express myself musically."
