Author Embarks on Next `Adrenaline Adventure'; AuthorHouse Writer to Climb Mount Kilimanjaro
BLOOMINGTON, Ind., June 23 /PRNewswire/ -- Fran Capo, the world's fastest- talking female, thrives on action and inspires readers, friends and family with her motto, "Create a great life!" This summer, Capo will embrace her next challenge - an African expedition that will take her to the peak of the continent's highest mountain and to the bottom of a crater ecosystem.
Capo, the author of several books including "Adrenaline Adventures: Dream it. Read it. Do it!" (now available through AuthorHouse), will ascend Mount Kilimanjaro, the highest freestanding peak in the world. Capo and her 15-year-old son, Spencer Patterson, who will be among the youngest to climb Mount Kilimanjaro, will follow the Western Breach -- the most rugged route -- to the 19,340-foot summit. The adventure begins July 3, with Capo and Spencer scheduled to reach the summit July 9.
Their path will traverse five distinct climate zones that begin approximately every 3,000 feet and take up to seven hours to climb. From the forest zone's buffalo, bushbuck and giant tree ferns to the heather zone's ethereal flowers and long, flowing mosses, Capo and Spencer will be treated to many exotic sights on the way to their ultimate destination -- Uhuru Peak. Members of the Masai warrior tribe will be their guides and guardians against the inherent perils of the African forest, such as hippopotamuses, which some consider to be the most dangerous animals one can encounter in the wild. Their housing accommodations will consist of dome tents, with mess tents and toilet tents as added "luxuries."
Located in Tanzania, Mount Kilimanjaro is made up of three dormant volcanoes, and the ascent holds risks beyond wild animals. Altitude sickness prevents many climbers from completing the journey. According to Corbett Bishop of Corbett Bishop Safaris, the tour company Capo has chosen to lead her trip, it is not uncommon for participants to experience nausea and difficulty breathing. In fact, the company's rule of thumb allows two episodes of vomiting before one must descend. Exertion and constant exposure to elements are not to be taken lightly. "If you are thirsty, you are already dehydrated. If hungry, then you are in energy deficiency," says Bishop. The desire to eat and drink wanes as the atmosphere grows thin, so Capo and Spencer will have to force themselves to ingest nutrients and water.
Capo and Spencer have prepared for this demanding adventure by completing extensive bicycle rides, including a 100-mile course, and then beginning a regimen of four typhoid tablets every other day. Other medical precautions include a battery of shots to protect the explorers from yellow fever, hepatitis A and tetanus. Essential items in their gear will be diamox to help with the altitude sickness, penicillin to fight bacterial infections and a water purifier.
After completing the climb, the mother and son team will take a 3-day safari across the Ngorongoro Crater, a self-contained ecosystem approximately 12 miles in diameter. Brimming with diverse flora and fauna, this crater is often considered "Africa's Garden of Eden."
No stranger to exhilarating and risky explorations, Capo chronicled previous excursions such as skydiving, fire walking and swimming with sharks in her book, "Adrenaline Adventures." Armed with three cameras and her flair for capturing the excitement of her journeys, Capo is sure to make this upcoming trip a thrilling chapter in her next book, "Adrenaline Adventures II: Dream it. Read it. Do it!", which will be published in April 2006.
When she is not writing or combing the world for her next adrenaline rush, Capo is a stand-up comic, actress, voiceover artist, motivational speaker and hypnotherapist. She co-created the award-winning cybersitcom "The Estrogen Files: Money, Men and Motherhood" located at http://www.theestrogenfiles.net/. She is also the Guinness Book of World Records' Fastest-Talking Female and has been featured on such programs as "Ripley's Believe It or Not," "Larry King Live" and "The Discovery Channel." A graduate of Queens College in New York, Capo has appeared on more than 1,000 radio shows and 250 television shows, and has been featured in numerous books.
