USES: Allopurinol is used to treat high levels of uric acid in your body. Uric acid can cause gout. This injection is usually given to people with cancer a day or two before receiving chemotherapy. Chemotherapy kills cancer cells and these dead cells can cause very high levels of uric acid in your body (tumor lysis syndrome).

SIDE EFFECTS: Nausea, vomiting, drowsiness, and/or redness/swelling at the injection site may occur. If any of these effects persist or worsen, notify your doctor. Tell your doctor immediately if any of these serious side effects occur: change in amount of urine, skin rash, seizures, joint pain, weight loss, loss of appetite. Tell your doctor immediately if any of these unlikely but serious side effects occur: stomach pain, yellowing skin or eyes, dark urine, unusual tiredness, fever, black or bloody stool, red or pink urine, difficulty breathing, change in amount of urine. An allergic reaction to this drug is unlikely, but stop the allopurinol IV and seek immediate medical attention if it occurs. Symptoms of an allergic reaction include: rash, itching, swelling, dizziness, trouble breathing. If you notice any other effects not listed above, contact your doctor or pharmacist.

PRECAUTIONS: Tell your doctor your medical history, especially of: kidney problems, liver problems, gout, any allergies. This drug may make you drowsy. Use caution engaging in activities requiring alertness such as driving or using machinery. Limit alcoholic beverages. Caution is advised when using this drug in the elderly because they may be more sensitive to the effects of the drug. This medication should be used only when clearly needed during pregnancy. Discuss the risks and benefits with your doctor. This medication passes into breast milk. While there have been no reports of harm to nursing infants, consult your doctor before breast-feeding.
